Barbara Pittman signed to Sun Records in Memphis during its celebrated period in the mids. She had a tough rock'n'roll voice but, despite good songs, had no hit records. She blamed the label's owner, Sam Phillips, for her lack of success. He would promote an instrumental. I said to him, "Why didn't you tell me that at the time and I could have gone some place else. Although Bear Family Records managed to fill a complete 6 CD box-set of women at Sun, only a very few actually had records released. Not even in her teens yet, she went to Sun Studio for an audition but was turned down by secretary-in-chief, Marion Keisker.
